High Blood Pressure Treatment Q & A
What Causes High Blood Pressure?
High blood pressure is often caused by a build up of plaque or fatty deposits in the arteries. As the arteries become blocked, the heart must use more pressure to force the blood to flow throughout the body. If a person is extremely obese, the pressure on their body to push the blood through the arteries and veins is also increased. High blood pressure puts stress on the walls of the arteries and can cause areas to weaken over time. As the plaque continues to build up, blockages may become so severe that the brain and heart are damaged due to lack of oxygen. This can result in a heart attack or stroke. If the build up of plaque is not addressed in a timely fashion, the damage to the heart can be irreparable.
How is it Treated?
High blood pressure is often treated with medications that thin the blood, making it easier for the heart to pump it throughout the body. It is also important to take the necessary steps to lower the amount of bad cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can be accomplished by eliminating fatty foods from the diet and replacing them with fresh fruits and vegetables that are high in dietary fiber. Another effective way to help lower and eventually control high blood pressure is to increase a person's level of physical activity. Not only will it make the heart stronger, it will help to lower bad cholesterol levels.
What Happens if it is not Brought Under Control?
If high blood pressure is not brought under control, it can lead to a variety of health issues, including heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, and damage to the upper respiratory system. High blood pressure weakens the heart muscle and can prevent it from functioning efficiently. As it continues to weaken, parts of the heart muscle can become diseased. This can also lead to weakness in other muscles throughout the body. If a person has other health issues that impact the circulatory system, such as diabetes, this can mean damage to the extremities that may result in amputation.
